JOB TITLE: Communications Specialist
KIND OF WORK:
Supports the development and implementation of communications and marketing strategies to build the NMF brand in the 12-county region, expand support base, and ensure consistent, strategic communications through all facets of the organization. Work requires accuracy, attention to detail and understanding of communication practices and marketing tactics for a nonprofit organization; provides administrative support to the Philanthropic Services team; supervised by the Senior Development Officer – Communications.
Website and Social Media – Lead staff on website enhancements, creates and edits video content, publishing and maintenance, including news, multimedia, event administration, online donations and program-related information. Serves as primary web copywriter and is the staff liaison to related vendors and consultants. Updates and monitors blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Publications – Researches topics for feature articles and serves as a contributing writer and editor. Creates content and design ideas; lead staff on proofing and publishing tasks. Works with program staff to meet communications needs and set timelines. Coordinates assigned projects from start to finish.
Development Team Support – Maintains communications files, performs budget monitoring and helps prepare presentations. Assists with preparation of strategic plan, annual work plan and budgets. Makes appointments, is point of contact when officers are out of the office.
Newswriting and Media Coordination – Writes assigned news releases in Associated Press (AP) style and coordinates distribution with administrative assistant for programs. Responsible for updating media contact and distribution lists.
Special Events – Coordinates photo opportunities, planning, promotion, sponsorship, budget and attendance tracking for foundation conferences and recognition events.
Conferences– Coordinates events along with any staff and/or consultants. Coordinates all marketing efforts, recruiting sponsors, exhibitors, presenters, and volunteers. Creates video for event.
IDEA Competition– Coordinates and assists staff on all marketing efforts and planning of awards event. Creates social media content.
Conference Center – Schedules and maintains room activity and manages calendar. Clears all patrons for use of the room, and ensures proper licenses are in place if necessary.
NMF Building – Schedules most building maintenance; coordinates crews to complete work. Schedules tours of facility as requested. Assures proper cleanup and scheduled cleanup of the conference room/catering kitchen is completed.
Other Duties – Maintains photo database. Works with administrative assistant for programs to facilitate and track donor contacts. Performs other duties as assigned by development officers-community funds, vice president for programs or president.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field preferred. At least one year experience in the mass media, nonprofit or public agency desired.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES DESIRED:
Exceptional writing skills in a variety of different styles, including creative copywriting, technical writing and news writing. Background in social media and interactive media development. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software required. Familiarity with graphic design and related software a plus. Highly organized and detail oriented; ability to work in a team setting with numerous deadlines.
