January 2008 News Release
NMF Grant Funding Available for Qualified Projects
January 2008 - To help meet its mission to make the region a better place to live and work, the Northwest Minnesota Foundation provides grants to public agencies and nonprofits with 501(c)3 federal tax-exempt status. The foundation is interested in supporting projects that will benefit the region's natural resources and area youth, seniors, and communities.
Community planning, caring communities, and natural resource program grants are made to organizations located and/or conducting activities in the 12-county NMF service area. Resources are available to help address issues and opportunities in partnership with the foundation.
To be considered for grant funding, a pre-proposal must be submitted on the NMF application form. They are accepted at any time; however, applicants are encouraged to contact NMF staff to discuss projects before submitting a pre-proposal. More information and a downloadable pre-proposal form are available on the NMF website at www.nwmf.org.
Grant requests will not be considered for capital campaigns, major equipment purchases, annual fund drives, endowments, building construction, religious activities, past operating deficits, general operating expenses, lobbying, publicity or advertising.
Projects should show evidence of grassroots support, the need for NMF funding, and plans for future sustainability. All grants are awarded for a two-year period or less and usually do not exceed $25,000. NMF will typically fund no more than half of the total cost of a proposed project.
Following are examples of recently awarded grants:
- $20,000 to create a plan for the redevelopment of the Lake Lomond Park in Bagley.
- $10,000 to update the comprehensive plan for Fosston.
- $25,000 to support the expansion of teen services in the Bemidji Boys and Girls Club.
- $25,000 to support collaborative efforts to deliver senior services in Marshall County.
- $25,000 to conduct a private woodland management program in the northwest region.
- $9,000 to start a new River Watch program in the Rainy River Basin.
If there is an idea you wish to discuss, please feel free to contact Jim Steenerson, Grants Specialist (e-mail jims@nwmf.org) or Peggy Crandall, Grants Services Associate (e-mail peggyc@nwmf.org). They may be reached by telephone at 218-759-2057 in the Bemidji area or toll-free 800-659-7859.
