2009 NMF Quality of Place Award

Dr. Kathleen Annette, Deputy Director of Field Operations, Indian Health Service

This annual award recognizes Northwest Minnesota Foundation partners, grantees, training participants and loan clients who have helped to develop community assets in a manner that enhances the quality of the places in the region through specific activities supported by NMF.

Along with a commemorative plaque, the award will be accompanied by a $1,000 grant to a nonprofit in the region of the recipient’s choice.

The award recognizes Dr. Kathleen Annette as an outstanding, unique and valued partner who has worked to improve the health and well being of the people in the region.

A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Annette holds a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry and a doctor of medicine. She obtained her residency training at the Duluth Family Practice Center, receiving board certification in 1986. Professional affiliations include the Association of American Indian Physicians. Dr. Kathleen Annette was the first woman in the Minnesota Ojibwe Nation to become a physician.

In 2000 and 2008, Dr. Annette was selected as a recipient of Presidential Rank Awards. These prestigious awards are presented annually to top federal managers for extended, exceptional performance in the Federal government. Dr. Annette’s other recognitions include the U.S. Public Health Service Outstanding Service Award; the American Indian Service Awards; the Mead Johnson Award from the American College of Family Practice; the Association of American Indian Physicians Recognition Award for Endeavors in American Indian Education on AIDS; the Jake White Crow Award; induction into the Academy of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota (she is the first woman to be so honored); and induction into the Northwest Minnesota Women’s Hall of Fame for significant contributions in her career field. In 2005, she was the first women and only the third person to be bestowed honorary membership in the Red Lake Nation.
